不说啥了,最近被m&c导论逼得很不舒服,顺便拿这张图练习一下。图下的说明被我生硬地翻成英语。整段东西的文字没怎么润色过,想到啥写啥,不管了。。。

This photo is taken after the gov has burned a set of houses that are “illegally built” in the city of Shenzhen. The caption reads “Among the thick and rolling smoke, a child is trying to put off the fire with a ladle of water in his hand, hoping to save the place that once was his home”. This picture is definitely an iconic representation of what has happened in this event. The camera angle is direct, and the picture is taken in a close distance. Thus, readers are interpellated as the spectators closely watching this child, and perhaps identified with those who have just lost their houses. The picture is not black and white, therefore it gives a more real sense of this setting, elements such as the clear texture contribute to this sense of realness. Besides, as the water is still flowing, the picture is caught in the midst of an action, which gives the readers a sense of immediacy and authenticity. These facts both contribute to the high modality of this photo, despite the fact that the way things are structured in this photo makes it look like an art work (which, on the other hand, also makes it more cognitively appealing). As can be seen this photo is mainly in dark colour. It signifies the mood of this event and of people who experienced this: depressed, sad, fear, etc. The darkness also symbolizes evil, which can be associated with the violence the gov has acted. The juxtaposition of a small and vulnerable child and the harsh environment creates more tension and enhances the intensity. The child is portrayed in shadow, and his face cannot be identified. This increases the vulnerability of this child, comparing with the background. It also generalizes this theme: this child could be any child who has lost his/her home in similar events, thus enhancing the intensity of the problem shown in this event.
